Tenants fight for heat in the Bronx

New York’s Housing and Preservation department says this apartment building has nearly a 1000 open violations.

They’ve repeatedly shut off the heat to folks paying 800 dollars or more a month, and during a cold snap like this one, that can be deadly.

Exavien Saez, 5, was gasping with asthma last week in his heatless Bronx apartment, saying it only goes away when they put the heat back on.

“It’s aggravated by the cold. It was so cold that we had to rush him to the emergency room,” said his mother, Carrie Saez.

“That’s not my problem. I don’t own the building,” he said.

A week later the heat’s back on, at least for now. Exavien’s mom says it won’t last.

“They’ll turn it off in hour. It won’t be on all night,” she said.

Bronx Community Ward 7 District Manger Fernando Tirado got the city to fill the furnace with emergency oil last week, but folks who live here say there are still days when it’s just as cold inside and out.

“I know these people are freezing. Many complaints a week later that they are still freezing,” Tirado said. Read more..

Sonia Sotomayor - ‘A Bronx Tale’

blog post photo

While juggling world crisis in Korea, Iran and the Middle-East as well as preparing for visits to Saudi Arabia, Egypt and France, Barack Obama has managed to squash, nullify and neuter any opposition from Republicans to his choice for the Supreme Court.

A Hispanic, “up from her bootstraps” women judge, Sonia Sotomayor is a deft and politically brilliant choice for his first nomination to the Supreme Court.

In making this choice Obama has reinforced once again his own personal story.

He has picked a candidate who exemplifies his belief that everyone, even from the most modest background, should have the opportunity to succeed.

The choice of Judge Sotomayor is as much a symbol for the Hispanic community as Barack Obama’s election was for the African American community.

It signifies that in America, the doors of power will open for those who work hard and move beyond externally imposed cultural stereotypes to higher ground.

Obama has stressed that he wanted a nominee with real life experience.

NY Landlords vs. NY Tenants .. Ok Who’s Telling The Truth?

NY Landlords vs. NY Tenants .. Ok Who’s Telling The Truth?

NEW YORK — In a city of skyrocketing rents, where tenant advocates charge that landlords are increasingly trying to move tenants out of rent-regulated apartments in order to significantly raise the rents, the landlord-tenant wars are becoming ferocious.

Traditional landlord tactics such as turning off heat and hot water are being joined, housing advocates and tenants say, by taking tenants to court repeatedly on baseless charges, such as nonpayment of rent when rent has been paid or illegal residency even if the tenant has the right to live in the apartment.

These allegations have prompted the New York City Council to consider two bills to allow accusations of harassment to be settled in housing court. One bill would give tenants the right to sue their landlords for harassment. An alternative bill, with less support, would give landlords the right to sue problem tenants for harassment.
