Comp-Scam Charge Jolts Bronx Boxer
December 10, 2007 — A veteran Bronx boxer is fighting for his freedom after being indicted for allegedly ripping off the state by claiming that an injury sustained in the ring was work related.
Edelmiro “Tiger” Martinez ran afoul of the law after seeking the International Boxing Federation’s No. 2 lightweight ranking - his record is 21 wins, 3 losses and 1 draw - in a rematch with Nate “Galaxy Warrior” Campbell on July 30, 2004.
Prosecutor Jonathan Scharf said in Queens Supreme Court last week that the bout at the Mohegan Sun ended after just four rounds, as jurors saw for themselves on a big screen.
After Martinez, now 39, was disqualified for repeatedly hitting below the belt, the ring doctor sent him to a Connecticut hospital, which found that he had a ruptured left biceps.
