
Views on Kingsbridge Armory’s future are clearly expressed at hearing
From the time Giuliani was mayor to this day, the redevelopment of the Kingsbridge Armory in the Bronx has elicited many different - and strong - opinions on what it should look like.
But for Virginia Tribelli, there is one issue that is crystal-clear.
“We don’t want a big-box supermarket in the armory. We don’t need it, and we are hoping that the community board votes against it,” Tribelli said, referring to the nonbinding, largely symbolic vote by Bronx Community Board 7 that took place on Tuesday.
In March, the city’s Industrial Development Agency voted to give $17 million in tax breaks to The Related Cos. to redevelop the armory.
The developer included in its plans a 60,000-square-foot supermarket, despite the fact that the Kingsbridge Armory request specified that it should not include stores that could compete with existing local businesses.
Not surprisingly, community business owners and workers are not happy about the fact that the city would use their own taxes to help put them out of business. Read more..
