Money can’t buy happiness, but championships …

Much has been made about this year’s World Series champions, the New York Yankees, and their astronomical payroll. Many critics point to the estimated $208 million the Yankees spent in player salaries in 2009, and claim the “Bronx Bombers” simply “bought” the World Series championship. While it’s true that the Yankees far outspent any of their opponents this past season, it’s hard to argue with the results: they are baseball’s best in 2009.

With this in mind, we’ve decided to take a look at World Series champions over the past 10 years and analyze whether big bucks can buy World Series success.

The Yankees have spent big dollars throughout the decade, and it’s paid off with playoff appearances in nine of the past 10 seasons, and four World Series appearances, but you’ll never believe how much they actually spent to get there. With the likes of A-Rod, Jeter and CC, the Yankees were able to bring the World Series championship back to the Bronx for the first time since 2000. The Red Sox have matched the Yanks as far as titles, and have kept up with New York in spending as best they could. It took a group of “idiots” and the greatest series comeback in postseason history to reverse the Curse of the Bambino in 2004. Read more..

Love ‘em or hate ‘em, the New York Yankees move on

The American League Championship Series is set. Alex RodriguezThe Los Angeles Angels will take on the New York Yankees. As half of the nation turns their collective support from the Minnesota Twins to the Angels, the other half will continue to battle against the opposition’s growing fan base as the playoffs roll on. The Yankees and their 103 regular season victories will welcome the Angels into New Yankee Stadium on Friday night for a weekend of “Bronx cheers”, if you will, and serenades by Frank Sinatra.

The Yankees versus anybody is like the classic battle between good versus evil… or evil versus good. They are arguably one of the most fan-polarizing teams in professional sports. What’s to like about a team that spends almost twice as much as the rest of the league in order to buy their way into the playoffs, stall games to put them near the four-hour mark on average, and basically beat their opponents with nothing more than their sense of entitlement. Bronx bombshell sends loud message

Attention, Yankee Nation. Attention, America. Attention, World. Attention, Universe. Attention, Galaxies Unknown. Attention, Babe, The Iron Horse, The Mick, and all other residents of that great Yankee Retirement Home In The Sky:

These are The Steinbrenners speaking.

WE’RE BACK!

Yeah, we’re back. We told you we had money and we were going to spend it. We told you we were tired of not winning. We told you we had enough of the (ugh) Red Sox and - this may have been even worse - the Devil Rays, or Sting Rays, or Ultra-Rays, or whatever they want to call themselves. Like, Tampa is a good place to live, but you wouldn’t want to own a ball club there, you know what we’re saying? Read more..

Bronx cheer for Bombers

It’s the dead of winter, it turns dark by 5 o’clock, the temperature is sliding way below zero again and the economy is in shambles.

But fear not, baseball fans, all is right with the world.

Why? Because it’s OK to hate the Yankees again. In fact, I encourage it.

While I must point out that some of my best friends are Yankees fans, I submit that it’s our patriotic duty to hate the Bronx Bombers. It’s part of our heritage.

More than 50 years ago, when the Yankee Dynasty really was a dynasty, a wise old sage summed it up nicely, famously saying, “Rooting for the Yankees is like rooting for U.S. Steel.”

Famed sports writer Jimmy Cannon once wrote: “I imagine rooting for the Yankees is like owning a yacht.” Read more..
